Real Rio was born of journalists with a vested interest in mega events

Ever since the Olympics landed in our hometown for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, we've seen first hand the joy these games can transport to millions of people at home and around the world... as well as the misspending, land-rights issues and private enrichment they enable.

Far from being a monotone critique of Brazil's Olympic project, Real Rio brings people together from across Rio de Janeiro and the wider community in an attempt to witness the long-term impact of the games through the eyes of locals, from demonstration to celebration.

The Real Rio team has reported from every Olympics since Vancouver 2010, including the 2014 Sochi Olympics which resulted in the short documentary Sochi Pride, as well as the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
